Challenge

We had an existing magazine client in the pharmaceutical industry who had been handling social media in-house. While there was a Facebook page and Twitter account set up, there was very little activity on either site. There was also an outdated website that was in the process of being updated. We had to build a strategy that would encompass social media and SEO, with the ultimate goal of sending people to the website and viewing the digital magazine and digital advertising on the site.

We were prepared. We knew the market they were currently reaching with the magazine and knew we had to reach that market using SEO and also connect to them on social media.

Approach

Our approach to this client's social media strategy was to roll it out in phases. We knew we would not only be building a strategy, but also setting up additional platforms and executing content updates. The initial phase consisted of the basics–reviewing and enhancing the existing Facebook page, creating a custom Twitter background and setting up a LinkedIn account. Once all platforms were up and running and added to the website's homepage, we were able to cross promote all social media accounts across each platform. The next step was to concentrate on the actual content we were going to push out. Keeping in mind the goals of our client¬–establish recognition as an industry expert and improve SEO saturation–we started building our follower base through a variety of methods. On the Twitter account, we began following the companies that advertised in the magazine, as well as the magazine's competitors and other industry experts. Retweeting posts from these sources, setting up and following industry specific hashtags in order to join conversations and mentioning other Twitter handles by posting article links all led to explosive organic growth. For LinkedIn, we posted industry content that other users started to like and/or share, which resulted in more followers. For Facebook, even though it's not the most active for our client, we built up the audience via cross-promotion and homepage linking buttons.

Once we established the regular posting of fresh content onto the website, we packaged the posts differently for each social media platform. For Facebook, we made sure to include a graphic 99% of the time with the post. For LinkedIn, we packaged the article links with more of a business focused wording, teasing our followers with a brief detail that would entice them to click through to the entire article. For Twitter, we kept things simple, mostly using the article headlines and consistently used a few industry specific hashtags with each post. We also sprinkled in retweets from other industry leaders as well as everyday people who were tuned in to the same topics we were covering. Ultimately we were having the same conversations on each platform but presenting it in a way that fit the channel.

Results

The results of our client's social marketing campaign and SEO have been beyond our expectations. Over a three year period, the website has seen a 160% increase in traffic with over 100,000 new visitors (uniques). The number of visits has increased 140% over the same time period, while there has been an 81% jump in the number of pageviews. Impressively, organic search traffic has leaped up 214% in a three year period. Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ accounts have all experienced at least double digit growth and are now regularly connecting the magazine to its audience and potential advertisers.

The content strategy we used for this client launched them into the world of social media, which directly impacted their online and print sales. Overall, this client now has more action on their website and is a solid competitor on social media in the pharmaceutical industry. Our strategies not only took their social media to the next level, but also their business.

  • Bridgeport Regional Business Council

We have found Tracy McCarthy and her staff to be competent, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. They are essentially the face of the Business Council when contacting members about advertising, and we have every confidence in their professionalism when dealing with our members. Each year, they propose several designs and work with us to determine the “look” of the Directory and try to keep some sense of continuity while also differentiating it from the prior editions. Tracy and her staff also work with us on the timeline, meet the deadlines that they have agreed to, and provide tremendous assistance and flexibility in helping us stay on track to produce the Directory in the designated timeframe.
